Do Not Sign Up For CIMB AirAsia Savers Account

A few months ago, I signed up for a CIMB AirAsia Savers account.

For someone with wanderlust like me, the CIMB AirAsia Savers account sounded like a great deal!
I mean, look at the promises!
  • Free flights!
  • AirAsia E-Gift vouchers!
  • Birthday treats!
  • Promotional fares!
  • Priority bookings!

Okay I'll lay off the exclamation marks for now.

Anyway, yes, a few months ago I applied for the CIMB AirAsia Savers account at a CIMB branch. To her credit, the lady who opened my account for me was nice and efficient, but the catch was that I had to link my AirAsia Savers account myself to my Big Shot ID online.

I would get my how-to notification letter by CIMB shortly, she said... except I didn't.

I even searched online and found this link. I entered my details but I never got any sort of confirmation that my AirAsia Savers Account and my BIG Shot ID was linked. I certainly didn't get the quarterly 250 BIG Points I was supposed to get with my RM1,500 average quarterly balance (TWICE by now).

So, puzzled, on the 15th of October 2014 I sent this e-mail to CIMB, inquiring about how to do so.

This is my e-mail in its entirety.

I applied for an Air Asia Savers account last month, and was hoping to link it to my BIG Shot ID in order to be eligible to earn quarterly BIG points.

However, I have yet to receive an e-mail notification from CIMB instructing me on how to do so, as it says here:

'To earn the BIG Points, CIMB Bank AirAsia Savers Account holders must register for the AirAsia BIG Loyalty Programme through an e-mail notification from CIMB Bank.' (http://www.cimbbank.com.my/index.php?ch=cb_per_st&pg=cb_per_st_sav&ac=2&tpt=cimb_bank#)

Kindly please advise me on how I may link my account to my BIG Shot ID, thank you.

(As of 08/01/2015, I tried clicking on that link again, and it does not show the AirAsia Savers option on the page anymore, instead redirecting to this page - http://www.cimbbank.com.my/en/personal/index.html?ch=cb_per_st&pg=cb_per_st_sav&ac=2&tpt=cimb_bank# - instead, I believe they have made changes to their website and the new AirAsia Savers Account website is this

I received a reply two days later.

Wow, how efficient! I'm impressed!

Let's see what it says, shall we?

Dear Mich,

Thank you for your email to CIMB Bank.

To earn the BIG Points, CIMB Bank AirAsia Savers Account holders must register for the AirAsia BIG Loyalty Programme through an e-mail notification from CIMB Bank. If you have not received the email, you will be required to liaise with your home branch for further action.

So this person is saying that I need to register for the AirAsia BIG Loyalty Programme through an e-mail by CIMB, and it has to be specifically by my home branch.

However, I *ALREADY* have an AirAsia BIG ID. I just want to LINK it to my AirAsia Savers Account. Is that not possible?

Also, I have a BIG Shot ID, not a Big Visa Prepaid Card. I don't have the Prepaid Card. I have the ID.

I decided to go to home branch in person, after all, and ask them. Today, nearly three months after receiving the e-mail.

What? I'm a busy person. Home branch is not exactly next door too, you know.

As I was saying, today I went back to the home branch of where I applied for my CIMB AirAsia Savers Account. I met the same lady who helped me start my Savers accounts.

At first she were flustered, saying that they have never encountered this kind of problem before (or maybe nobody cared enough to chase up on this), and then there was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing as said lady and her colleagues discussed what to do next.

Finally, she had me give my e-mail, and said that she will send along the e-mail that I am supposed to use to link my AirAsia Savers Account to my BIG Shot ID account. Apparently nobody had the e-mail, and they needed to find someone higher up in the authority scale to send along the e-mail.

Again, the lady was nicely efficient, and I got the e-mail a few hours later.

After all that hoo-ha about it, I thought it was some type of fancy e-mail with a SPECIAL LINK ONLY for EACH INDIVIDUAL AIRASIA SAVERS ACCOUNT HOLDER TO REGISTER.

In the end, it was not.

It was this.

Let me get this straight.

For this non-fancy, instruction-type e-mail, I had to make myself go ALL THE WAY to the home branch to get it?

Nobody from Customer Service at CIMB could forward this to me? Is this some kind of sacred e-mail that only the very higher-ups could have, and will be forwarded only when an AirAsia Savers Account holder pops up? Must it be deleted within 24 hours of being forwarded?

Okay, fine. Snarky comments aside, this was it, I thought. I could finally FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS, type in THAT LINK, and FINALLY, FINALLY, link my AirAsia Savers Account and Big Shot ID.

Or not.

So I don't know what is going on with this deal between AirAsia and CIMB Bank, but clearly it's not going well if it's so hard to get past the second step of just linking them together, never mind reaping the benefits they claim to have.

I have the AirAsia Big Shot ID, I have the AirAsia Savers Account... and I just can't get them to marry even though they said they were perfect for each other.

My conclusion is that if you're looking to reap some benefits for being an AirAsia frequent flyer, the CIMB AirAsia Savers Account is not going to help.

Sign up for it if you like the interest rate or want a CIMB account, but forget about it if you were hoping to add value to your AirAsia experience. It definitely hasn't done anything to add value to mine.

A disappointed consumer.
